Has Social Media increased the quality of news and information or decreased it?

I believe that social media has increased the quality of news and information. It is now one of the fastest ways to get news spread across the whole world. Just as how much it is great to have news spread so fast, it also has a negative impact. While news is spreading from home to home, people and also each source of the media would start to add in their own point of view of how they think the news came about or occurred. This gives many of the readers / viewers a totally different news than what has really happening.
Social media is very open to any readers and it also spreads very easily and fast. Because of the how fast these news get spread, and also in many different ways of story lines, it becomes very difficult for a researcher to collect the actual details and true statements about the news they are gathering information about. One of the advantages is that some news and information are recorded onto books, newspapers, internet are not from what many think, or what “may” have happened. This would prevent the researchers from false information. All that many people need to know now a days in this world is to know which source to rely on and which one not to rely on.
With the highly improved social media all around us, we must be able to find out for ourselves what is actually going on, instead of depending on others. Just because Social Media has got a lot of popular ways to get information to you, it does not ever mean that they are not false information. Overall, Social Media is a great way to get yourself educated. With almost everything that is happening around the world, you would be able to know where you can get information and which relates to another and sounds more truthful, instead of just listening to others and expanding the story from what you heard already.

What is your perception of social media, do you think it is a fad or the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution?

I really think Social Media is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution. The reason being is because Social Media is now very easy and affordable all around the world. It gives almost everyone around the world a chance to involve themselves in the world of media and also have their say in any topics. Social Media keeps cultures and all kind of communities united.  When a person is not with their family and is alone in a totally different country, social media is one way for them keep in touch with all family and friends and keep their relationship still alive. Websites such as YouTube, Facebook and more are now great ways to advertise one another. For example, a normal person from anywhere in this world can publish his or her talents worldwide and can make great hits. More supports are found from social media. Also for many workers, Social Media is now a daily need. They are all able keep themselves occupied, connected and updated with the society and among one another. Sites such as Yahoo also allow users to ask questions which will be open to other users to answer and help out. This will increase unity among people and may result in some people’s friendship and more. Even though Social Media is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution, it can also be a big shift of the misuses of all the great opportunities out there. Just like how it is great to ask a question which other users can reply to, there are also people who criticize and act inappropriately towards others. As much as freedom one has with Social Media, they also have the same amount of responsibility in their hands when handling with Social Media. Simply Social Media has changed so much that it gives anyone, from anywhere to access it and pretty much do anything with it.
